Today was my first day in Bangkok. After arriving in the guesthouse (which is right near the famous backpackers area Khao San Road) I decided to wander up to get something to eat. As I walked down the street I heard shouts for massages and taxis, and passed by stands filled with clothes, shoes, and everything else a backpacker could possibly need. My stomach was grumbling from the horrible airplane food I barely touched so I sat down at a restaurant and ordered a big portion of Pad Thai, and a large beer. The whole meal cost me only four bucks. :) I then returned to my guest house to have a short nap. I only planned on 2 hours but I guess I was more tired because I ended up sleeping for 4 hours! I then rushed to meet a couple of Couch Surfers- a German, Italian, and Thai. We walked around Khao San (which is too foreign filled and a bit overwhelming for my taste) and grabbed some street food. I had a great meal of rice, chicken, and veggies for about $1.20 CDN. The food was good but super spicy- something I will have to get used to. Another thing I need to get used to is the heat! Its pretty warm- and a lot warmer than Vancouver! Afterwards we went for a beer and met up with a family of Aussies (a Dad and his son). The Dad just spent the past 7 weeks with 3 of his sons backpacking around South East Asia! (Super cool!) The Dad shared with us pictures of the 2 beautiful houses he has made- both from around 85% recyclable materials! Things that people were throwing away perfectly good, he used to build his house.
Well now I am tired and I hear a bunch of cats fighting right outside my window. Off to sightsee with the Couch Surfers tomorrow and than Ill pick up Angie from the airport!!
Until then..

ReplyDeleteQuite a start to your adventure. What a deal for that pad thai and beer. Great that you were able to meet up with a few people and catch some sights of the city. It is going to snow here today. Lucky you being in an opposite climate - tropical. Look forward to your posts.
Love,
Daddy

Hey, Krista
ReplyDeleteGlad to see you are again doing all the things that you love. You are a traveller for sure!
The food and beer sound great. I would be in heaven with all of the spicy Thai food.
Get some rest when you can...I know its hard but you will want to be ready to see as much as you can while you are there. Including that moon beach, right?
Take care but have fun too!
